The Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), the “world’s largest workspace,” will be opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, with the aim of moving the entire diamond trading industry from Mumbai to Surat.

With an area of 66 lakh sq.ft, the greenfield project DREAM (Diamond Research and Mercantile) City is designed as a township spread over almost 700 acres. The bourse comprises nine 15-storey interconnected towers and offices that range from 300 sq ft to 7,5000 sq ft.

More than 4,000 CCTV cameras have been installed at SDB, and approximately 27 retail jewellery stores will be opened. Also, the Prime Minister will open the newly built terminal building of Surat International Airport.

The Rise of Surat From ‘Diamond City to ‘Global Diamond Processing Hub.

In contrast to Mumbai’s dominance in diamond exports, Surat has emerged as the primary processing city and is fittingly known as the “Diamond City.” Surat is where roughly 90% of the world’s rough diamonds are mined and polished before being sold to buyers in nations such as China and the US. This thriving industry is now being centralized under one umbrella with the launch of the Surat Diamond Bourse.

One of Prime Minister Modi’s flagship projects is the Diamond Research and Mercantile City, where the Surat Diamond Bourse is located. The construction of this complex, which includes nine 15-story towers and roughly 4,700 offices, is a significant move towards consolidating the diamond industry. With 130 offices being operational and already in use, it marks the start of a new chapter for Surat’s economic development.

For a building larger than the Pentagon in America, this is what we know.

1. The world’s largest office building, the SDB building, is situated in Khajod village near Surat city, with over 67 lakh square feet of floor space. 2. At a cost of 3400 crore, the Surat Diamond Bourse was constructed on 35.54 acres of land. It is poised to become a significant location for trading in both rough and polished diamonds worldwide.

3. With more than 4,500 offices that are interconnected, it is the world’s largest interconnected building. The largest customs clearance house in the nation and larger than even the Pentagon is the office building.

4. 4,200 traders from 175 countries can use the Surat Diamond Bourse to purchase polished diamonds in Surat. 5. Approximately 1.5 lakh individuals will find employment at the trading center. Additionally, it will provide a global platform for diamond buyers from all over the world to trade in surat through the trading facility.
