In the BAFTAs on Sunday, 18 February, Oppenheimer won the award for best film and was victorious over director Christopher Nolan, lead actor Cillian Murphy, and Best Picture. A total of seven BAFTA awards were won by the film. With five wins, Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos was a close second.

Among the speakers were David Beckham, who presented the golden mask for Outstanding British Debut, Dua Lipa, who presented the award for Outstanding British Film, and Deepika Padukone, who awarded the Film Not In The English Language award.

Cillian Murphy expressed appreciation to Nolan for acknowledging his potential, stating that “I didn’t see myself in the way he did” during his first BAFTA win. Accompanied by his fellow performers, the actor who collected the award at London’s Royal Festival Hall described the success as “mind-blowing” and expressed both excitement and surprise.

And for the second time, Robert Downey Jr. was awarded his second BAFTA win – 31 years ago when winning against Charlie Chaplin. Upon receiving the award, the US actor mocked Nolan’s suggestion to take on an understated role in his portrayal, with the goal of reinstating “my diminishing honor.”

Five awards were won by the surreal dark comedy “Poor Things,” including Best Actress for Emma Stone. The film featured Stone, who won the award for “La La Land” in 2017, as a reanimated corpse from the Victorian era brought back to life.

Oppenheimer was announced as the winner of best film at Sunday’s ceremony, with Michael J Fox making a surprise appearance to announce it. Despite having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease for more than three decades, the 62-year-old was given a standing ovation by the audience.

After securing the first Bafta of his career, Murphy declared to the ceremony: “Oh my god.” Ohhh, my God. Thank you so much, Bafta.

Nolan was praised by the Irish actor for his contributions to “Oppenhomies” and his dedication, which he said “Thank you for pushing me further and striving for excellence.”

As reported by Deadline, Killers of the Flower Moon had nine nominations while Maestro from Bradley Cooper received seven and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was nominated for the biggest box office movie of 2023.

The movie featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling received five nominations.
